The Quarterly Compass: Market Update

The stock market has shown remarkable resilience this year despite geopolitical uncertainty, elevated energy prices, and rising interest rates. While that strength is encouraging, higher borrowing costs remain an important development to watch.

A Look at the Markets

Through October 21, the S&P 500 was up approximately 13.66% for the year, while the Russell 2000, which tracks smaller U.S. companies, had gained approximately 12.79%. Meanwhile, Brent crude oil settled a little above $109 per barrel, and the 10- year U.S. Treasury yield stood near 5.129%.

These figures highlight a dynamic worth watching: stocks can continue to advance even as borrowing becomes more expensive.

Why Higher Interest Rates Matter

The 10-year Treasury yield influences borrowing costs throughout the economy, including mortgage rates. Higher rates can affect households, businesses, and the federal government in several ways:

For households: Higher mortgage rates make buying a home less affordable, which can reduce demand and slow housing activity. Other forms of borrowing can become more expensive as well.

For businesses: Companies issuing new debt or refinancing existing loans may face higher interest expenses. Those costs can weigh on profits and affect decisions about hiring, expansion, and investment.

For the federal government: Higher rates increase the cost of issuing new debt and refinancing maturing obligations. Over time, rising interest expenses can put greater pressure on the federal budget.

There is no simple solution to these challenges. Addressing federal borrowing and spending requires difficult policy choices, and the timing of any meaningful changes remains uncertain.

What This Means for Your Financial Plan

Higher interest rates bring both challenges and opportunities. While borrowing becomes more expensive, investors may find more attractive income opportunities in bonds and other interest-bearing investments. At the same time, existing bonds generally decline in price when rates rise, making maturity, credit quality, and liquidity important considerations.
